If you’re looking for the best way to restore your smile, you’re probably wondering what the best type of prosthetic is, and how long you can expect it to last. After all, it doesn’t matter how affordable it is if you must keep replacing it every few years. But when it comes to dental implants, how long yours last depends on a variety of things, including the materials they’re made of. Here’s why when it comes to longevity, these prosthetics are a better bargain than any other restoration on the market!
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
How long your dental implants last depend on several factors, including how well you take care of them, and what they’re made of. Here’s what you can expect from each component:
- Dental Implant Posts: The post, or the dental implant itself, can either be made of titanium or zirconia. Both are biocompatible, which means they have a high success rate when integrating into your jawbone and staying permanently in place. Both materials are durable and long lasting, however zirconia is slightly less corrosion resistant than titanium. Still, both materials could last 30+ years with proper care and usage.
- Abutments: The abutments (where the tooth or “crown” sits) are made of the same materials as the posts; either zirconia or titanium. Because they use the same metals, they offer the same durability as the posts themselves, however they are more likely to need replacement as they are not integrated with the bone and thus have less protection from damage.
- Crowns: The crowns are the easiest part to damage, but thankfully the easiest and most affordable part to replace as well. Crowns can be made of porcelain or acrylic, but porcelain is more durable than acrylic, though both can chip if put under too much pressure.
How Can I Make My Dental Implants Last Longer?
With proper use and maintenance, your dental implants could last a lifetime, but only if you take good care of them. Here are a few tips to help ensure that they last as long as possible:
- Always brush your teeth (both real and prosthetic) twice a day, and floss once a day.
- Visit your dentist regularly for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
- Never use your teeth (real or prosthetic) to open packages, bite fingernails, crunch ice cubes, or chew pen caps.
- If you grind your teeth (bruxism) speak to your dentist about having a custom bite guard made to protect your teeth and dental implants.
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste, as their finish can become scratched if you aren’t careful. Furthermore, do not use whitening products on them, as this could also damage the finish. Be aware that this type of product does not work on dental restorations.
- Quit any bad oral health habits like smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, or vaping.
Remember, dental implants were designed to permanently replace lost teeth for a lifetime, but they’ll only last if you take care of them. With a 95 percent success rate, these restorations are the best way to give you back your smile, and thanks to their durability are a better overall value than products like dentures and bridges.
