Dr. Austin Haught
Dr. Austin Haught was born and raised in Encinitas, and from the time he was born until he went to college, he lived his whole life in the same house that was less than a mile from our dental office! Thanks to his 10+ years of experience, our state-of-the-art dental technology, and amazing team, Dr. Haught is able to provide a comprehensive range of dental services while prioritizing each patient’s unique needs throughout the treatment process. He’s eager to welcome you into our practice, but first, you can learn more about him below.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
To put it simply, Dr. Haught became a dentist because he wanted to be able to help people. He likes that as a dentist he’s able to build long-term relationships with his patients and their families, all while helping them maintain and improve their smiles and overall health.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Haught obtained his undergraduate degree at UCLA, majoring in chemical engineering with an emphasis in biomedical engineering. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine. Prior to returning to his hometown of Encinitas and joining Smiles by Design, he practiced for several years as an associate in San Diego.
Dr. Haught is committed to continuing education and has completed extensive training in dental implants, CEREC®, and all aspects of cosmetic and general dentistry. He is a certified Invisalign® provider and has also been trained to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique® and Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation®, minimally invasive methods to correct gum recession that do NOT require scalpels, sutures, or palatal grafting.

Dr. Haught believes in giving back and volunteers with Healing California, providing free dental care to homeless and at-risk veterans. He has also volunteered his time with Give Kids a Smile and taken a mission trip to Tonga, providing dental care to underserved patients, many of whom had never had access to a dentist. He has previously worked in research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and volunteered at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic in Pennsylvania.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Haught is married with two children, and when he isn’t practicing dentistry, he enjoys fishing, scuba diving, sailing, traveling, and spending quality time with his family.
